Fang-Spun Helga

By request here is Spun Helga. This actually is one of my more fave Fang releases!
Ken

Here is a review of the album:
This record has not only been undervalued and forgotten by fans, but lead singer Sammytown as well. Fang never plays anything from this album in live sets. Fat Bitch, Evil Runs Free, Dr. Eugene Scott, Tin Plated Iron Man, Honor Among Thieves & the hilarious Madonna are among the best songs the band has ever produced under any lineup. I have to believe that Spun Helga was never fully accepted by fans because it was the first record with the Landshark/Where the Wild Things Are lineup powered by the distinctive Tom Flynn guitar sound. It is also the most musically diverse and ambitious undertaking the band ever attempted. From the classical guitar sounds of Madonna to the funk intro to Fat Bitch to a cover of Tequila, this was a sound few of us were ready or willing to here. My friends and I loved this masterpiece when it was originally released, but we were clearly in the minority. The record is so forgotten that I can't find the real cover (the above was not it) anywhere on the internet. It was recorded by a ragtag bunch, including a drummer named Ollie who only appears as a stick figure drawing on the original insert, during a stay in Germany. There was a whole new lineup behind Sammytown on the vastly more appreciated A Mi Ga Sfafas, the next record. If you like Fang or any of Sammytown's other projects you'd be well served to find this.

Executioner Interview. One Of San Jose's Finest!

Hey all here is a link to an interview I did with vocalist Dave Burks from San Jose punk band Executioner. If you like Crucifix, Batallion Of Saints, Bad Brains, etc you will love them. They were a HC band that was around from 1981ish to 1985. They have a single entitled Hellbound that was recorded back in the day that is released on Patac Records and it is getting rave reviews. Between Grim Reality (with pre-Social Unrest, Jason Honea) and Executioner, those two bands made their own little scene. Though different than Los Olvidados, Drunk Injuns, Mistaken Identity, Faction, etc. they played many shows with these bands. Please spend a few dollars and support a very cool band and help support a small label that puts out raging punk rock!

Maybe Someone Knows This Tune?

Had a question from one of our friends out in blogland and was wondering if anyone out there could be of help. Seems that Antonio recorded a song years ago from a radio show but never knew who the artist was. It's not familiar to me but thought there must be someone out there that knows who this band is. We'll keep our fingers crossed.

A Bit Of Respect

For all that do not know this. Punk Friction has been a mentor to this blog and a worthy helper since our inception. In fact, I have known Longy since the Talkpunk days and I just want to give his blog a proper send off. Longy, thank you for all that you have done helping me figure this shit out. Thank you for helping me with all my requests! From The Rejects Quiet Storm, to many requests for The Wall to the Rezillos, I appreciate it more than you will know. You see, I have never met him. I am just someone that is online. However, there is a community that we all belong to and that is punk rock, or whatever you want to call it. All of these blogs run its course and all good things come to an end. The thing that is very cool is that there are others out there, and many of you that fit this description, you count! As this wonderful blog winds down, I just want to raise a pint, and say thank you! Oh and if ya think this is mushy Longy, piss off, your club is still shit, shit shit shit shit!!!!!Respect!

For Laughs

For those that check in and leave fantastic comments I appreciate it. For those wanting a good laugh, please scrowl down to my little post on The Swingin Utters Brand New Lungs Ep. I got an annon. comment that was laughable and moronic. I posted it because I am not going to censure someone's comments. Sad that people are this stupid. Anon, you're a dumbass. Did you know, that I actually know the band? That I too played in some bands. In fact, I am pretty damn sure that if you listen to The Swingin Utters, then you have listened to my old band. You can call me a faggot like you did, and all I am going to do is just laugh and your inability to write a sentence, and to post anything coherent. Why are you such a coward that you have to post something annon.??????? If you don't like my blog, then don't visit! Simple as that Jack.

Alejandro Escovedo - Street Songs of Love

I know my number of posts has been lacking lately but to be honest the nice hot summer season is quite short in Canada and I'm really trying to enjoy the sun while I can. This is also giving me some time on my patio with the Ipod going and a beer in my hand to listen to some things that I have aquired lately. The Class Assassins was the first one I wanted to highlight as it is a great release. Another release that has been getting many spins on the Angry patio is the new release by Alejandro Escovedo. Totally different from the Class Assassins but very much as enjoyable. A wonderful release and you even get guest vocals from Ian Hunter and Bruce Springsteen. This gets an Angry recommendation!

Peter and The Test Tube Babies-Zombie Creeping Flesh 7"

What can I say about one of my alltime favorite bands. I was a young punk rock kid in the early 80's digging them beyone belief! Mating Sounds.....was one of my favorite albums of alltime. Flash forwward to 1998 and I am touring the USA with them for nearly 3 months. Well, full circle happens, and the band is friends with my old band and me. This period is in my favorite of all time. That is my opinion...the best by far. I remember buying this 7" and just slamming around my room, much to my mothers concern and just thinking this band was IT! They were to me! This band has always had a soft spot in my heart and I am proud to say that they are friends. In fact, I get to help them book, drive, merch dude for them in January. It will be fun and I cannot wait! Ladies and genteleman, one of my alltime faves....Peter and The Test Tube Babies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Red Alert-Drinkin' With Red Alert

Drinkin' With Red Alert came out as a double 7"....I got the cd version and it had the half ass attempt of a release called Beyond The Cut as a bonus tracks. Well Drinkin' With Red Alert was a fantastic release with a couple of great covers. You get The Beginning Of The End by The Cockney Rejects and East Side Of Town by Slaughter and The Dogs. This release had a total of 7 songs and was a nice return to form from Sunderland's finest!

Live At Winterland

Man I am prolific lately huh??? Just to clarify here, this is NOT the CD Presents release, but a bootleg made much earlier than when they did it. If anyone does not believe me, download it and find out. iTunes had it on for awhile before The Avengers made him take it off. iTunes are in mp4 or something like that, and this is mp3. I don't think I need to introduce THE best punk band to come out of San Francisco, so I won't. What you have here is The Avengers opening for The Sex Pistols on the last ever show at The Winterland in San Francisco. Sound quality is fantastic and the performance is a wonderful as ever.

UK Subs-Motivator 12" Ep

Another Ep that I have not seen posted on the web. This was a strange period for the Subs to me. After the release of Japan Today it seemed that the creative juices of Charlie and Co. were waning...then this comes along! Facist Regime, Motivator and Combat Zone just scorch!!!! The other two might be a tad filler, but who cares. Those three songs made ammends for the horrid Japan Today album! Of course, The UK Subs would go onto release some ok to good stuff before reuniting with Nicky and Alan for Quintessentials, Riot, (which really is one album), Revolutions Here Ep and the non Garrett/Gibbs effort Universal (with a Charlie Harper wearing a Forgotten t-shirt in the inner sleave!). I love this EP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Chelsea-Live at The Music Machine 1978

Well since I am in a Chelsea mood, I thought I'd throw this dittie at you! I bought this from Released Emotions back in the late 1980's. This is a great live show from Chelsea's most popular 5 piece lineup from 1978. Adding James Stevenson really made a difference with their sound. Great sound quality...is this a BBC recording or something??? Love this album!

Chelsea-Underwraps

Well, I thought I'd post this because you don't see it around too much. I bought this lp about 5 years ago and had to buy a turntable that plugs into my computer just to hear it. I own everything that Chelsea has put out and consider myself pretty knowledgeable fan. After their S/T, Alternative Hits and Evacuate, Chelsea started to slump. I really like Original Sinners, and thought Rocks Off had a couple of moments, but truth be told, they were going down hill. I have read that some guy named Willy Grip who played keyboards for Gene was the one writing most of the songs....Well the guy was no James Stevenson or Nic Austin that is for sure. This leads up to Underwraps.....Ummmm well this album is better than Rocks Off but still is lacking something. Nice to see Topper Headon making a guest appearance on here too. If you want to check out later day Chelsea then you should pick up The Alternative, Traitors Gate and their latest effort Faster, Cheaper and Better Looking. Still this album is one that you need to have in your collection to say you have it.

Angelic Upstarts-Brighton Bomb 12" Ep

Nice cover there huh? Just to show you that I do like some of the later Upstarts stuff, I present this ep to you. 3 solid songs that are more of a folkish style if I might say. A nice re-working of Soldier from the much maligned Still From The Heart finds its way on here. Enjoy!

Angelic Upstarts-Bombed Out

A return to form? Mond back in the fold? Do you think those two things have anything in common? I do.....After The Upstarts released Reason Why, you could hear the demise of The Angelic Upstarts....listen to Last Tango In Moscow, Power of The Press and Blood on The Terraces and tell me that they did not have the same range and power that Mond had a hand in on their earlier relesases. Not to say that there were moments on each of the later albums...Here and there you'd get a small sample size. Of note would be: One More Day, Brigton Bomb, Pride of Our Passion. Even better yet, check out the album Lost and Found for more Mond guitar genius....You see, I always cheer on the underdog and Mond is one of the those. Someone that really never get's his due. Just like Dave Gregg of DOA, Guy Days of 999, Del from PATTB....Good tasteful players that make a band better. Same goes for Decca. On the albums that he played on, his playing just made The Upstarts soooo much better. Sticks belonged in the Rejects, Decca belonged in The Upstarts. Two different bands, two different approaches. Well on this release you have Decca, Mond, Mensi and a few others helping out. This album is probably my fourth favorite Upstarts release. This came and went without a wimper. Too bad. This album is damn good. Enjoy folks.
